"My mother was the miller's daughter," she told him, voice rich with wry amusement. "And my first love was our stableboy." She took a kiss, grown old enough and bold enough not to need to wait for it to be given the way she had then. "You could be a beggar for all I care.

And yet, something warm and wickedly perverse bubbled up in her then, the rebellious part of her spirit that had given rise to her evil self. He could be a knight. She was the queen after all. It had to be good for something in this world. Not today, but someday soon... yes.

She hid a grin (take that, Mother) behind the light in her eyes that was all him. "So, now, say that again without the hesitation." Sue her, she liked hearing it. Even if you dropped the 'E' word, she was still a possessive witch.

Without knowing her mind, he caught that sparkle in her eye--sweet mischief and that warmth, that light that banished the stains on his heart every time she turned it on him. Her demand--her command made him laugh a little, but he took it seriously as he looked dead into her eyes.

"The will of the gods upon my tongue: I am your dragon knight." he repeated, promised, then sealed the simple promise with another kiss--simple, chaste, ceremonial.

And when he drew back, raised an eyebrow at her with a mischievous smile of his own. "Happy now?"

"Mmmm." Regina hummed a noncommittal note as though she might be as unimpressed with his vow as she had been with his texting. But then she slipped deeper into his embrace, hugged him tightly, and turned a sweet, sincere smile back up at him. "As happy as I've been in a long while."

As happy as she'd been with Robin, and that, if he only knew it, said everything.
