The easy way she kissed him like that, like he was the sun she was tipping her face to greet--the way she touched him, stroked his hair in that way that stole the bones from his body and made him feel worthy...Neil had no idea what to do with it.

He just knew he'd slaughter a regiment with his bare hands and bathe in blood to keep it.

Her explanation made him smile, the arm that wrapped reflexively around her shoulders when she leaned into his chest tightening a little as he answered her with a playful scoff.

"Told you, dating's for finding a mate." He reminded her. "I never..."

He never expected to survive this long, and when he did he never expected to have prospects as a simple soldier...and when he became the Night Dragon's personal assassin, he knew his blood soaked hands were nothing he could ever offer a prospective bride, much less a true mate.

He never knew he was going to meet someone that could look at those stains, stare into his black heart, and not just want him, but believe in him. Trust him.

"It's hard to have a social life when you spend most of your time tryin' to kill people, know what I mean?"

He just smiled at her ability to sympathize, his hand settling on her shoulder, thumb straying to rub a gentle, soothing line along the ridge of her collarbone in silent reassurance. For the things he knew, the things he didn't know--for every shadow she carried, every shadow he tried to will away whenever he was with her.

The observation about what might wait for him back home was surprising--not that she thought he might have left his heart somewhere else, but the idea that he even could after what he'd found in her. She had seen his heart, saw light where he had none to give--save for dahgo.

The notion made him smile as she she did, and in its light he swore he could feel the darkness on his own heart lift for just an instant.

"Nothing stolen about this." he promised, the hand on her shoulder drifting up to cradle her cheek. "So that's nothin' you have to worry about--and nobody back home. Just a lotta working girls that're never gonna see my ugly mug again." He rolled his eyes in teasing self-deprecation. "Probably gonna be relieved. Look at that, you've done the realm of Nocturne a public service by spoiling me on other women. Might even be a commendation in it for you or somethin'."

"...Regina..."

His heart was on his tongue, ready to spill from his lips, and Neil just barely managed to wrap it up in her name instead of an I love you. It was too soon, and yet here she was telling him she would rip out hearts on his behalf...it stole his breath and was its own kind of frustration.

Still, he smiled, bright and broad and humbled as he met her gaze, held by her tenderness, helpless in the wake of a giddy sort of warmth. All he could do was finally nod, and swallow his heart back down again.

"The will of the gods upon your tongue." He promised. "I'll try to remember. And if I forget?"

His heart rolled forward again. He wrapped it in other words again, finally breaking her gaze and tipping his head back, hoping she remembered the story of the Sky Maker.

"I'll look up."

Seeing those tears--they hurt, but they gave him a little bit of hope. It made him wonder if it was real, beneath all the myth and poetry...

Gathering both her hands in his, he pressed them to the center of his chest--where she'd slid fingers into his body that first night to show him his heart, and how fast she could crush it.

"Skies have clouds, it's not always clear. You can't always see every piece--and that's okay." he assured her softly. Hesitating, he pressed her hands more firmly against his chest, running his thumbs along the backs in a gentle caress as his mouth worked soundlessly for a long moment, trying to find a way to explain...

"Dahgo. It doesn't really have an English translation--okay, it kinda does, but I'm not telling you what it is yet." His playful smile made a joke of it for a moment, then softened. "It's like one of those foreign words that describes the...smell of loneliness in a forest, or the way it feels to sit on a bus with a buncha people, crap like that. It's complete conquest through perfect submission--a win/win situation you can only achieve by putting yourself in a position where you are a hundred percent gonna lose."

He took a deep breath, then kissed her.

"It's getting your heart ripped out, and not really being able to feel anything? But remembering just enough that you kiss the person holding it right before they crush it and kill you. Dahgo is the reason you steal that kiss--you know you're not gonna live, and you don't care 'cause you got to kiss the girl. You felt her mouth on yours, you know how she tastes, and you did it with a perfect understanding of what was coming. Even if you die, you still got kissed--win/win...only sometimes, just sometimes, you get lucky. You don't just get the kiss, you get your heart back, too. That's dahgo. That's what I have right now, right here, with you...and if someone crushes my heart? Too goddamn bad, I still win: they can't take away what I feel. The worst that can happen is getting my heart back. Do you understand? I mean--does that make sense?"

"I do know." he assured her in a husky whisper, nuzzling his nose against hers as his mouth curled into a smile. "And I don't need to know. I don't need, I don't want--I have."

The words weren't said--but he knew. She knew. It was thrilling, it filled him with light--and yet he felt a serenity he'd never known underneath that beautiful freefall into her.

"And I am. Your...dragon knight." He paused, laughing softly as he ducked his head, shaking it a little in amazement. "I like that, it's--you do realize I have absolutely no noble blood, right? I held position at court, but I never held a title."

Without knowing her mind, he caught that sparkle in her eye--sweet mischief and that warmth, that light that banished the stains on his heart every time she turned it on him. Her demand--her command made him laugh a little, but he took it seriously as he looked dead into her eyes.

"The will of the gods upon my tongue: I am your dragon knight." he repeated, promised, then sealed the simple promise with another kiss--simple, chaste, ceremonial.

And when he drew back, raised an eyebrow at her with a mischievous smile of his own. "Happy now?"
